The moment
Taittinger

The Taittinger House is one of the last family-owned Champagne houses. From its beginnings, it chose to focus on the Chardonnay grape variety, which now accounts for 70% of its vineyards. It is from this grape variety that the house produces bottles of champagne with an exquisite taste. The flagship product of the Taittinger house is the Cuvée Prestige, a fresh and light champagne with a wide range of aromas. The Cuvée Les Folies de la Marquetterie is perhaps the champagne most closely associated with the Taittinger Champagne House, as it is made from grapes grown around the Marquetterie estate, a château owned by the house. Finally, the house's prestige cuvée is the Comte de Champagne Blanc de Blancs, a 100% Chardonnay that draws its strength and elegance from the exceptional terroir of the Côte des Blancs.

The Taittinger Champagne House: a family history

The company we know today has its origins in a Champagne wine merchant founded by Jacques Fourneaux in 1734. At that time, the Taittinger family were Champagne wine merchants. In 1932, Pierre Taittinger acquired the famous Château de la Marquetterie near Epernay. Today, thanks in large part to Pierre's many successors, the Taittinger Champagne House is one of the largest champagne houses not only in Reims and France, but also in the world.

This success was due to the family motto: excellence. Indeed, "Having our family name on a bottle imposes a responsibility and a constant demand." (Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger)

The great successes of the Taittinger House

Firstly, it should be noted that the House stands out for its use of Chardonnay, which has become a trademark of Taittinger, as most other houses use mainly Pinot Noir. There are many reasons for choosing Chardonnay, including its freshness, delicacy, and elegance, which are incomparable to other Champagne grape varieties and always produce wines with a certain restraint.

Let's now talk about the legendary cuvées of the House!

Let's start with the Comtes de Champagne cuvée, a world-famous 100% Chardonnay! This Blanc de Blancs champagne has always been produced in good years. The recent vintages available in bottles are: 1990, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 20082.

There is therefore a Comtes de Champagne Blanc, but there is also a rosé version, known as Comtes de Champagne Rosé.

Indeed, the Taittinger Champagne House is as well known for its Blanc de Blancs as it is for its Rosés. Prestige Rosé is one of the House's flagship cuvées! This Rosé is distinguished by its shimmering color and generous hue, which owes its captivating color to its meticulous blend of different grape varieties: 12 to 15% red wine from the best Pinot Noir grapes in Champagne give this champagne great intensity on the palate. There is also 30% Chardonnay, which gives the Prestige Rosé Taittinger the elegance characteristic of Taittinger Champagnes, all blended with a few touches of Meunier, which enrich this wine with its binding quality and deliciousness.

Next, we have the famous Les Folies de la Marquetterie, a cuvée made exclusively from grapes grown in the Taittinger vineyard. It is a wine with aromas of peach and apricot compote.

This champagne was created because Claude Taittinger wanted to pay tribute to the Château de la Marquetterie, the birthplace of the House, by creating a wine from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines that surround it. What's more, its name comes from the word "folie," which refers to a steeply sloping plot of land, so steep that it seems crazy to work the vines there.

Don't forget that Taittinger produces a special series called "Taittinger Collection," which was created by Claude Taittinger. The concept is to call on some of the greatest masters of art to showcase the House's vintage Grands Crus bottles. The latest edition of the "Taittinger Collection" dates from 2016 with the 13th bottle, whose image was redesigned by French-Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado.

In addition, the name "Taittinger champagne" also appears in works of art in their own right. It is regularly mentioned in the SAS series of novels, but is also cited in several books in the James Bond series, notably in Ian Fleming's Casino Royale (1951): "Give me some Taittinger blanc de blancs... It's not very well known, but it's the best champagne in the world."
