The Millésime 2018 by Taittinger is a vintage champagne. This vintage captures the expression of a single year's harvest in Champagne.
It's a cuvée that opens on juicy white fruit and delicate floral notes, before revealing, with time, more indulgent hints of brioche and almond. This aromatic evolution comes hand in hand with a round, enveloping texture, carried by a lovely balance of freshness and roundness.
This is a bottle you can pour from the aperitif onwards, alongside comté gougères or smoked almonds, before bringing it to the table with a creamy Bresse chicken or a morel risotto.
The Millésime 2018 is a blend of:
These are Premier Cru grapes that Taittinger sources across Champagne's terroirs, without limiting itself to a single village to compose this vintage cuvée.
Premier Cru classification guarantees an origin among the region's best-situated plots, a mark of quality reflected in the wine's precision. This diversity of plots allows the House to draw on several expressions of Champagne terroir to build the vintage's balance.
Across these terroirs, Chardonnay lends the wine its tension and freshness, while Pinot Noir gives it body and roundness that lend structure to the whole.
Alexandre Ponnavoy, Taittinger's cellar master, built this equal blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for the 2018 vintage. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, a choice that preserves the grapes' natural freshness rather than adding oaky notes. Malolactic fermentation was carried out in full: it softens the wine's acidity and gives it a velvety mouthfeel, rounder than a wine in which it was blocked.
The dosage is set at 9 grams per litre, corresponding to a classic dosage within the Brut category. This measured amount refines the wine's balance without ever masking its freshness, leaving room for clean, precise flavours carried by the fruit and by the cellar master's craft.
Spring 2018 proved especially bright in Champagne, encouraging early flowering: late May for Chardonnay, early June for Pinot Noir. This head start held through to harvest, which began as early as 20 August and continued into early September, in ideal summer conditions. The crop promised to be excellent, with abundant, sugar-rich and highly expressive bunches.
Born of these conditions, the Taittinger Millésime 2018 blends equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with 70% Grands Crus and exclusively Premiers Crus making up the remainder. It then ages for more than five years in the cellar to reach its full expression. This generous maturation gives a wine that is rich and vibrant, true to the promise of this sun-soaked year.
The colour is a golden hue with pale glints, animated by a fine bead that rises in a steady stream, born of the long rest in tank before disgorgement.
The nose opens with delicate floral notes, before giving way to touches of white fruit and yellow fruit. Time spent on lees then reveals pastry and brioche-like notes, rounded off with a hint of almond that adds depth.
The palate opens with a lively freshness and an immediate sense of energy, carried by honeysuckle notes mingled with lovely hints of peach and citrus. The texture reveals itself as silky, supported by a fine aromatic concentration and a crisp mineral edge, the full malolactic fermentation having preserved this backbone without hardening the wine. Flavours of ripe fruit mingle with nuances of citrus and toasty notes, for a long, elegant palate lifted by a touch of salinity. The subtle finish lingers on lovely bitter notes of orange peel.
Your bottle travels in shipping packaging designed specifically for transporting champagne, so it arrives in perfect condition. From there, a few simple habits are all it takes. Lay it on its side: this keeps the wine in contact with the cork, which retains its elasticity and continues to protect the cuvée properly. Store it somewhere with a stable temperature, around 12°C if possible, as sudden swings tire the wine and speed up its evolution. A little ambient humidity is welcome too, to stop the cork drying out. Keep it away from light, especially direct sunlight: this is what's known as "lightstrike", a flaw in aroma that exposure to light can cause over time. Finally, avoid vibrations and frequent handling, so the wine can rest undisturbed. With this 2018 vintage, you have plenty of leeway: these few precautions are enough to preserve all its freshness until you're ready to open it.
The style of the Millésime 2018 from Taittinger champagne will evolve over several years, offering different faces depending on when it's tasted. This is a wine with an ageing potential of around 15 years.
Serve this Millésime 2018 at 9-10°C as an aperitif, and a touch warmer (11-12°C) alongside a dish. Choose a slender flute or, better still, a tulip glass: its narrower shape concentrates the aromas and lets the bubbles breathe for longer than a coupe would. Open the bottle by holding the cork firmly and turning the base, easing it out without a loud pop, then pour gently in two stages to stop the foam overflowing. There's no need to decant or open it ahead of time: serve it as soon as it's opened, and it's ready to show all its freshness.
Alexandre Ponnavoy, hailing from Burgundy and the son and grandson of farmers, took over from Loïc Dupont after thirty years working alongside him, having served as his deputy from 2015. This 2018 vintage already bears his stamp, born of a strict selection of the year's finest plots. Taittinger carries this same rigour through to its most intimate cuvée, Les Folies de La Marquetterie, born at the heart of its historic vineyard.

2018 was an early, sun-drenched vintage: rapid flowering, harvesting beginning on August 20, and grapes rich in sugar. This ripeness resulted in an expressive wine, aged for more than five years in the cellar to reveal its full complexity.
This vintage will be ready to drink starting in 2026, reach its peak around 2032, and can be cellared until 2040. Aging in stainless steel tanks and full malolactic fermentation promote a faster evolution, balanced by the Chardonnay/Pinot Noir blend.
A vintage champagne, such as this 2018 cuvée, comes from a single harvest year, unlike a non-vintage blend, which combines several harvests. It thus reflects the specific characteristics of a particular summer—in this case, an early and sunny one.
As an aperitif, it pairs well with Comté gougères or foie gras on toast. For dinner, try Bresse chicken or pan-seared scallops, and for dessert, a pear almond tart.
