The creation of Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial champagne

Created in 1869, Moët & Chandon's Brut Impérial is the most faithful expression of the house's style. Its blend is based on a meticulous selection of more than 200 crus from the most prestigious terroirs in Champagne, guaranteeing a perfect balance between aromatic richness, freshness, and elegance.

A rigorous selection of grape varieties

Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial is made from a trilogy of iconic grape varieties:

• Pinot Noir (30-40%): this grape variety gives the cuvée its structure and intensity. It is mainly sourced from the terroirs of the Montagne de Reims and the Aube, renowned for their power and complexity.
• Pinot Meunier (30-40%): this brings a silky texture and roundness on the palate. It is mainly harvested in the Marne Valley, where it flourishes on clay-limestone soils.
• Chardonnay (20-30%): it infuses the wine with finesse and freshness, thanks to grapes from the grands crus of the Côte des Blancs, such as Avize and Cramant.

A precise blend and masterful winemaking

Moët & Chandon applies centuries-old expertise to preserve the authenticity and consistency of its Brut Impérial. The juices are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve their aromatic purity and reveal the full richness of the Champagne terroirs. This choice of vinification gives the champagne a distinctive signature, where freshness and precision dominate.

A special feature of Brut Impérial is the addition of 20 to 30% reserve wines. These wines, aged for several years in the cellars, bring extra depth and complexity to the final blend. They also help to maintain exemplary consistency from vintage to vintage.

Optimal aging for perfect expression

After blending, Brut Impérial is left to rest for around 24 months on its lees in Moët & Chandon's historic cellars in Épernay. This maturation process develops the champagne's secondary aromas, giving it its brioche notes and silky texture.

Disgorging is followed by a controlled dosage of 9 g/L, an ideal balance that highlights the wine's natural freshness without altering its aromatic brilliance. This signature dosage ensures perfect harmony between fruitiness, creaminess and liveliness.
