      Description

      Description & elaboration

The Brut Réserve cuvée from Pol Roger is a champagne born from the blending of thirty carefully selected crus. It is a champagne with notes of mango — ripe yellow fruit — and white flowers, with a beautiful aromatic frankness. On the palate, the texture is tonic and fresh, perfectly suited for an aperitif or a gourmet meal. This iconic cuvée perpetuates the style of the Pol Roger house.

      The Terroir

The blend is drawn from thirty crus spread across three geographical zones. The Pinot Noirs come from the Montagne de Reims, concentrated around Ambonnay, to bring structure to the base wine. The villages of Oiry, Chouilly and Cramant provide the Chardonnay, a variety that draws from the Campanian chalk to express a precise mineral tension. The Vallée de la Marne offers Pinot Meunier a deep clay soil, conducive to the fruity concentration of the grapes.

      The winemaking

The blend is based on equal thirds of Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay.

The cellar master then incorporates 25% reserve wines. The ageing on fine lees lasts a full four years. Each methuselah is riddled by hand on a traditional riddling rack — a method that delivers a fineness of bubble and aromatic precision that a gyropalette cannot match. The final dosage is 9 g/L.

      A non-vintage champagne

Crafting this NV (Non-Vintage Brut) requires reproducing a consistent aromatic benchmark from one year to the next. The cellar relies on the must of an identifiable base year. The continental Champagne climate generates strong thermal contrasts: cool autumn nights preserve the natural acidity of the berries on the vines. The Pinots provide the backbone, while the Chardonnays weave the floral and mineral framework.

The winemakers incorporate a quarter of reserve wines kept in tanks. These juices from previous vintages compensate for the climatic variations of the latest harvest. Their addition guarantees the consistency of the blend before the secondary fermentation in bottle.

      Tasting notes

      • Appearance

The colour displays a luminous straw yellow hue. The effervescence is abundant and fine.

      • Nose

The nose opens with a frank and persistent profile. It reveals aromas of yellow fruit such as pear, before broadening into notes of honeysuckle and jasmine.

      • Palate

The attack is fresh, with subtle chalky accents. The structure builds around flavours of cooked fruit such as apricot. The finish lingers with elegant nuances of green anise and cardamom.

      The advantages of the methuselah

The methuselah holds six litres, the equivalent of eight 75 cl bottles — enough to serve forty-eight flutes at a reception. Its large volume reduces the proportion of oxygen beneath the cork. The gas exchange remains lower than that of a standard bottle, which slows the wine's evolution. This favourable volume-to-air ratio allows the cuvée to develop slowly, encouraging moderate yeast autolysis.

The Plus de Bulles expert opinion

      Why I love it

Its precision and balance have always won me over. I love its aromatic framework blending white flowers, green apple and brioche. On the palate, the bubble is exceptionally fine, underpinning a persistent finish with nuances of honey and dried fruit.

      My recommendation

Serve at 8–10 °C in a wine glass to release its aromas. Ideal as an aperitif or alongside creamed poultry. Ready to enjoy now.

      Advice

      How to store this champagne?

Plus de Bulles ships this six-litre methuselah in a reinforced transport box specially designed for champagne. After receipt, we recommend storing it horizontally, away from light — ideally in a cellar, or otherwise in a cool, not too dry place at a stable temperature.

      Ageing potential

The Brut Réserve Pol Roger methuselah will continue to evolve favourably after purchase. This large format offers a cellaring potential of approximately three to five years in good conditions.

      • Drink now: the wine displays the vivacity of the Meunier with notes of mango.
      • After 4 years: the texture gains in aromatic volume, moving towards pastry and beeswax.
      • After 5 years: autolysis brings tertiary complexity leaning towards cooked fruits.

      Serving suggestions

Serve this methuselah between 8–10 °C to preserve the balance between bubble and aroma. A tulip glass encourages contact with the air and releases the compounds developed during the forty-eight months of ageing.

      A note about this cuvée

The house's crayères extend thirty-three metres beneath the Avenue de Champagne, naturally regulating the temperature during ageing. This cuvée was the daily tipple of Sir Winston Churchill, who was particularly fond of the structure of the White Foil. Its consistency earned it a Royal Warrant. Fiction meets history: James Bond regularly orders this brand.

Some enthusiasts seek the expression of a single harvest. You will then appreciate the excellence of a vintage blanc de blancs champagne from Pol Roger.

      FAQ

The price of Pol Roger Brut Réserve is 559,95 £GB. This cuvée is aged on its lees for four years and its six liters are riddled entirely by hand.

Sommeliers praise the precision of its dosage, set at 9 g/L. Check out our customers’ detailed reviews in the dedicated section: Reviews of Pol Roger’s Brut Réserve champagne.

The optimal temperature for enjoying Pol Roger Brut Réserve is 8–10 °C. This temperature range controls the release of carbon dioxide while bringing out the autolytic character and preserving the natural acidity.

Aging on the lees lasts forty-eight months. The “Methuselahs” age thirty-three meters below ground level, a period that far exceeds the fifteen months required by the appellation.

The Methuselah reduces the volume of oxygen inside the bottle beneath the cork. This air-to-wine ratio slows the wine’s aging process compared to the 75 cl bottle, promoting the gradual development of tertiary aromas over the years.

The 9 g/L dosage enhances the creaminess of the poultry without making it heavy. The Chardonnay’s crispness cuts through the richness of the sauce. The Meunier ties together the textures of a scallop risotto.
