      Description

      Description & elaboration

The Cristal 2015 cuvée from Louis Roederer is a champagne born from forty-five Grand Cru plots on pure chalk soils. It is a champagne with notes of ripe peach, roasted almond and mirabelle plum, with a persistent mineral signature. On the palate, the texture is silky and taut, carried by a saline, chalky finish that calls for fine dining. Crafted according to biodynamic principles since 2012, Cristal remains one of the rarest and most sought-after cuvées from the Roederer house.

      The Terroir

The vineyard used to produce Cristal is spread across forty-five plots, all with outcropping chalk subsoil. The vines, averaging over twenty years of age, draw deep into this mineral bedrock, ensuring freshness and tension. The grapes come from the great regions of Champagne: the Vallée de la Marne, the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. They are sourced exclusively from seven Grand Cru-classified villages: Verzenay, Verzy, Beaumont-sur-Vesle, Aÿ, Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant.

Across these 45 plots, thirty hectares are worked by draught horse, preserving the structure of the clay-limestone soils. Composts prepared according to biodynamic principles (an agricultural approach based on natural cycles and the use of plant-based preparations) stimulate microbial activity in the plots.

      The vinification

The blend comprises 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. The Pinot Noir gives the cuvée its structure and the power typical of great Pinot Noirs. Under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, a quarter of the musts ferments in wood, in oak foudres, plot by plot. This method imparts a complex oxidative patina without masking the expression of the chalky terroir.

The house chooses to block malolactic fermentation (a process that would soften the wine's natural acidity) in order to preserve the acid tension of the blend. The retained malic acid thus supports the mineral precision of Cristal over the long term. Lees ageing extends for 80 months in the chalk cellars.

This cycle includes 72 months of maturation on laths, followed by eight months of post-disgorgement rest in the cellar. The dosage is set at 7 g/L by means of a liqueur d'expédition (a sugar solution added at the end of production), classifying Cristal 2015 as a brut champagne.

      The 2015 vintage

The year 2015 was characterised by high continental temperatures and a dry spring that encouraged early flowering. Summer heat episodes concentrated berry ripening. Restorative rains in late August revived vegetative activity, preserving the balance between richness and freshness.

Harvest began in remarkable sanitary condition. The Pinot Noir produced dense clusters with thick skins, offering structure and aromatic depth. Meticulous sorting on the sorting table allowed only grapes of optimal potential to be selected.

The Chardonnay retained a total acidity level well suited to ageing. The extracted musts displayed a low pH, guaranteeing the freshness that is characteristic of this sunny vintage.

      Tasting notes

      • Appearance

The colour of this bottle (75 cl) displays a luminous golden hue with copper highlights, reflecting the share of Pinot Noir in the blend. The effervescence is particularly fine, rising in regular streams along the glass. The persistent mousse bears witness to the long time spent on laths.

      • Nose

On the nose, the aromatic concentration asserts itself from the very first pour. The bouquet opens on notes of yellow fruits, mirabelle plum and peach. A few moments in the glass release wafts of roasted almond. The evolution continues with aromas of toasted brioche and praline, the legacy of 72 months on laths.

      • Palate

The attack on the palate is marked by a precise, incisive energy. The silky texture unfolds over flavours of candied citrus and hazelnut. The absence of malolactic fermentation maintains a tonic backbone throughout the tasting. The finish closes on a saline persistence and a fine chalky imprint.

The Plus de Bulles expert's view

      Why I love it

I was captivated by the vibrant energy and silky caress of this cuvée. What moves me is its bouquet of white peach and roasted hazelnut ; it stretches towards a finish of candied citrus and iodine-tinged spice.

      My advice

Serve at 8–10 °C in a wine glass to fully release its complexity. Wait until 2035 for it to reach its peak.

      Advice

      How to store this champagne?

Plus de Bulles ships this bottle (75 cl) in reinforced packaging specially designed for champagne transport. Upon receipt, we recommend storing the bottle horizontally, away from light — ideally in a cellar, or at the very least in a cool, not too dry location with a relatively stable temperature.

      Ageing potential

Cristal 2015 Louis Roederer benefits from exceptional ageing potential, underpinned by 72 months on laths and the absence of malolactic fermentation. The cuvée offers a cellaring window of approximately fifteen to twenty years.

      • Until 2028: tasting will focus on fruity aromas of fresh mirabelle plum and ripe peach.
      • From 2029: bottle evolution will develop autolytic notes of brioche and toasted hazelnut.
      • Around 2035: with the years, touches of gentle spice and dried fruits will enrich the aromatic palette.

      Serving suggestions

Remove the bottle from the refrigerator fifteen minutes before serving. A brief aeration in a wide-bowled glass will allow the nose to fully open up. Contact with the air encourages the diffusion of yellow fruit and almond notes.

      A note on this cuvée

The original 1876 bottle featured a flat base made of solid crystal. This bespoke vessel was created for the safety of Tsar Alexander II. The cylindrical, punt-free shape prevented a bomb from being concealed beneath the bottle. This recalls the vinous character of a vintage cuvée de noirs.

The decision to block malolactic fermentation structures the juice with a sharp vivacity. This aromatic profile evokes the mineral brilliance of a pure vintage Chardonnay.

      FAQ

The 2015 Louis Roederer Cristal is priced at 286,95 £GB. This cuvée is aged for 72 months on racks and is made from grapes grown using biodynamic methods across forty-five Grand Cru plots.

Tasters highlight the strong mineral character of this blend. Its chalky notes, aroma of toasted almonds, and briny finish leave a lasting impression on the palate. Read reviews of the 2015 Cristal cuvée from Louis Roederer Champagne.

The wine ages for 80 months in the cellars of Reims. This period includes 72 months on the lees prior to disgorgement. An additional eight months of aging follow the addition of the expedition liqueur.

The house adds 7 g/L of sugar during disgorgement. This level classifies the bottle as "brut." The dosage balances the natural acidity of the musts, which are preserved without malolactic fermentation.

Cristal is made exclusively from very old vines cultivated using biodynamic methods on chalky soils. This selection requires extended aging to reveal its full range of complex aromas. The Vintage expresses itself more quickly, with a distinct blend.

The wine’s briny profile pairs perfectly with fresh seafood. A citrus-infused sea bass carpaccio or poached lobster will highlight its minerality. It is best served in flared glasses.
