The Special Club Oger 2017 from Pierre Gimonnet is a champagne sourced from the single village of Oger, a grand cru classified village at the southern end of the Côte des Blancs. This origin gives it a natural power and a more pronounced minerality.
This is a cuvée built around white orchard fruit and a touch of floral character, lifted by a smoky nuance that sets it apart from our usual blends. Its texture stays beautifully balanced, carried through by a saline tension on the finish.
This is a bottle you can pour from the very first glass, alongside Comté gougères, before bringing it to the table with a sole meunière or a lemon meringue tart.
The Special Club Oger 2017 is a Blanc de Blancs, meaning it is made entirely from Chardonnay.
The Chardonnay comes from the terroir of Oger, a Grand Cru village on the Côte des Blancs, where Pierre Gimonnet tends its vines.
This Grand Cru classification marks out one of the most sought-after terroirs on the whole Côte des Blancs, an area growers regard as the historic heartland of Chardonnay in Champagne. It's here that the variety finds what are considered its most favourable conditions, delivering the fullest expression sought for wines destined for long ageing.
On this terroir, Chardonnay gives the wine a lively tension on the palate and a saline minerality that carries through the finish.
Didier Gimonnet, the winemaker at the helm of the estate, farms this 2017 Chardonnay with the lightest possible touch on the environment: soils are respected, herbicide use kept to an absolute minimum, and fertilisation is almost non-existent, encouraging roots to dig deep into the chalk. This restrained rather than forced approach to viticulture reveals the true character of the terroir, favouring minerality over fruit. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, a neutral vessel that lets the terroir speak without adding any oaky notes. Malolactic fermentation was carried through in full, softening the acidity and bringing a velvety roundness to the palate. The Extra Brut dosage then fine-tunes the balance, without ever masking the tension of the fruit. The resulting minerality comes through delicately, held together by chalky notes that extend the wine's freshness.
In 2017, on the Côte des Blancs, summer alternated between spells of rain and long stretches of dry weather, forcing growers to keep a very close eye on how the grapes were developing. While other parts of Champagne had to contend with rot, the Chardonnay in Oger was able to hold out for full ripeness before harvest began, which was approached here with real ambition. Picking started in mid-September in dry, cool conditions, yielding grapes that retained good acidity despite tighter yields brought about by careful selection. This natural freshness in the Chardonnay gives the cuvée its saline tension and precision, the signature this vintage has left on the Special Club Oger.
The wine shows a pale yellow colour with silvery glints, kept crisp and clean by ageing in stainless steel. Fine bubbles rise steadily with a persistent mousse, a sign of a carefully managed second fermentation.
The nose opens on lively citrus, followed by juicy white orchard fruit and a touch of floral character. Extended lees ageing then brings out pastry notes, a lovely brioche warmth and a hint of almond, adding depth to the whole.
The palate opens with a clean, mineral tension, carried by a very restrained dosage. Full malolactic fermentation has rounded out the wine, giving it a generous, creamy texture that coats the palate without ever weighing it down. Citrus and white orchard fruit echo back, carrying through to a saline, lingering finish, where almond leaves a delicate imprint right to the end.
Your bottle travels in packaging specially designed for shipping champagne, so it arrives home without the slightest knock. Once home, lay it down horizontally: this keeps the cork moist and maintains its seal. Choose a storage spot where the temperature stays fairly stable, ideally around 12°C, as fluctuations tire the wine and speed up its evolution. A touch of ambient humidity is welcome too, to stop the cork drying out over time. Keep it away from light, which can cause "light taint", an unpleasant note reminiscent of cooked cabbage. Finally, avoid vibrations, which disturb the wine unnecessarily over the long term. With these few simple steps, you'll let the freshness and tension of this Special Club Oger 2017 keep developing quietly, until the day you're ready to open it.
The style of the Special Club Oger 2017 from Pierre Gimonnet will keep evolving for several years, gradually revealing new nuances. This is a wine with an ageing potential of around 15 years.
Serve this 2017 at 9-10°C as an aperitif, or 10-12°C alongside a dish: the freshness shows off its tension beautifully without masking the aromas that have developed over time. A tulip glass is the best choice, taller than it is wide, concentrating the aromas towards the nose while still letting the bubbles do their work. Open the bottle by holding the cork firmly and turning the base, for a controlled, quiet release. There's no need to decant or open ahead of time: pour it straight away, as this champagne is ready to show its full complexity as soon as it's served.
Since 1750, the Gimonnet family has been growing vines on the Côte des Blancs, a story that winemaker Didier Gimonnet continues today at the helm of the House of Pierre Gimonnet. The estate is one of the founding members of the Club Trésors de Champagne, whose historic name, Special Club, this cuvée carries. This circle of growers champions a particular vision of Champagne: favouring harmony over intensity. Oger's Chardonnay also appears in the Oger Grand Cru, with an equally faithful sense of restraint.

The drinking window for the 2017 Special Club Oger vintage opens in 2029, with its peak expected around 2037 and its maturity limit in 2040. Its mineral intensity and Extra Brut designation give it excellent aging potential.
The 2017 Special Club Oger pairs well with sole meunière, seared scallops, or turbot with hollandaise sauce. As an aperitif, it also pairs well with Comté gougères or Parmesan shortbread.
The 2017 vintage means that this cuvée comes from a single harvest, unlike a non-vintage champagne, which is blended from several years' harvests. This allows the identity of the Oger terroir from that particular year to be fully expressed.
Malolactic fermentation converts malic acid into lactic acid, naturally softening the wine’s acidity. In this case, the fermentation is complete, which adds roundness while preserving the mineral tension characteristic of this Grand Cru Chardonnay.
