Description

The Millésime 2013 Retrouvé, crafted by Franck Bonville, is a Blanc de Blancs champagne. It is made exclusively from Chardonnay, the House's signature grape.

From the very first glass, this cuvée speaks of citrus and white orchard fruit, lifted by a delicate floral touch. Its taut, mineral-driven texture gives it real backbone and remarkable freshness.

This is a bottle you can pour as an aperitif, alongside parmesan shortbread for instance, before bringing it to the table with turbot in hollandaise sauce, letting the pleasure carry on right through the meal.

The Terroir

The Millésime 2013 Retrouvé is a Blanc de Blancs, meaning it is made solely from Chardonnay.

The Chardonnay comes from the Côte des Blancs, a Grand Cru-classified area of Champagne where Franck Bonville tends his vines.

The subsoil here is deep chalk, a rock that drains away excess water and forces the vines to dig deep for their resources, giving the wine its tension and precision. Chalk also retains a natural coolness that translates into a saline minerality on the palate.

On this terroir, Chardonnay lends the wine its vibrancy and its clean, upright character.

Winemaking

Olivier Bonville, the winemaker at the helm of Maison Franck Bonville, chose to ferment this 2013 Chardonnay entirely in stainless steel tanks, a vessel that preserves the purity of the fruit without adding any woody notes. Malolactic fermentation was carried through in full, softening the grape's natural acidity and lending the wine a velvety mouthfeel.

The dosage, in the Brut category, then fine-tunes the wine's balance without ever masking its underlying tension. This choice allows the honest, true-to-variety aromas to shine through, with no sweetness getting in the way.

At Franck Bonville, every step of the process serves a single purpose: giving this 2013 vintage the clarity and precision that are the House's hallmark.

The 2013 Vintage

In the Côte des Blancs, 2013 opened with a cool, damp spring that delayed budbreak by several weeks. A relatively wet autumn in 2012 had kept the foliage healthy, allowing the vines to build up good reserves in the wood, and a sharp, cold winter gave way to a cool spring whose frosts spared the late-budding vines. Summer began beautifully, with full flowering in early July, then continued warm and dry, though punctuated by the occasional storm. Despite this, the vines never quite made up the lost time and ripening progressed relatively slowly, making for a tricky harvest once the weather turned in autumn. Even so, the Côte des Blancs enjoyed relatively dry harvest conditions, and the Chardonnay, picked first, was the real winner of this Indian summer. This slow ripening and the freshness it preserved give the wine its tension and its saline, upright character, the signature of this patient vintage.

The colour is a deep golden hue, typical of wines that have matured for several years in the cellar. The reflections are bright and the bubbles are fine, carried by a persistent bead that speaks of great freshness.

The nose opens on lively citrus notes, quickly joined by juicy white orchard fruit and a delicate floral touch. With aeration, deeper aromas emerge, pastry, brioche and almond, the mark of a long rest that has patiently transformed the wine.

The palate opens with a crisp mineral tension, immediately wrapped in a rounded texture made especially silky by the complete malolactic fermentation. The brut dosage allows for generous volume without ever weighing the wine down. The finish is long and saline, echoing the almond notes picked up on the nose.

Plus de Bulles ships this bottle in packaging specially designed for transporting champagne, so it reaches you safely. Once home, lay it on its side: kept horizontal, the cork stays moist and maintains its seal, protecting the wine from air. Store it in a cellar with a stable temperature, avoiding sharp swings, as sudden changes tire the wine and speed up its evolution. Adequate humidity keeps the cork from drying out and letting air in. Keep it away from light too: prolonged exposure can lead to lightstrike, that unpleasant note which spoils the aromas. Finally, avoid vibrations, which disturb the wine over time. Under these conditions, this Millésime 2013 Retrouvé, already at a beautiful point of maturity thanks to its chalky terroir and preserved freshness, will keep evolving gently until you're ready to enjoy it.

The style of the Millésime 2013 Retrouvé from Franck Bonville champagne will keep evolving for many years to come. This is a wine with a cellaring potential of around 18 years.

  • From 2026 the wine still shows hints of citrus and white blossom, carried by a crisp, lively freshness.
  • Until 2033 toasted brioche and yellow fruit take the lead, offering a more burnished, enveloping texture on the palate.
  • Around 2043 stewed fruit, honey and gentle spice notes mark a colour and character that have grown deeply mature.

Serve this Millésime 2013 Retrouvé between 10 and 11°C as an aperitif, or 11-13°C alongside a meal: this brings out its aromas without dulling them. A tulip glass, taller than it is wide, is best, concentrating the aromas towards the nose while still letting the bubbles express themselves. Open the bottle by holding the cork firmly and gently turning the base, avoiding any sudden jolt. This wine needs no decanting: serve it straight away, or perhaps fifteen minutes after leaving the cellar to let it open up gently on the palate.

The name of this cuvée comes from a long-standing tradition at Franck Bonville: in great vintage years, Olivier Bonville, the winemaker at the head of the estate, sets aside a few bottles in the House cellar to age for longer, out of sight. Years later, these forgotten bottles are rediscovered and revealed to the world, hence the name. The Collection Privée 2010 follows the same patient philosophy that runs through the House.

FAQ

The price of Franck Bonville's 2013 "Retrouvé" vintage champagne is 74,95 £GB. It is a 100% Chardonnay Grand Cru from the Côte des Blancs, and the winemaker intentionally kept some bottles in the cellar for extended aging before releasing them to the market.

Wine enthusiasts appreciate the mineral crispness and the citrus and white fruit notes of this Grand Cru Chardonnay, as well as its pastry-like evolution toward brioche and almond. Discover reviews of the 2013 Retrouvé vintage from Franck Bonville Champagne.

A vintage champagne like this 2013 comes from a single harvest deemed exceptional, whereas a non-vintage brut blends several harvests to ensure consistency. Here, the 2013 Grand Cru Chardonnay fully expresses the characteristics unique to that harvest year.

The 2013 vintage will enter its drinking window in 2026, reach its peak in 2033, and can be cellared until 2043. This long aging potential stems from the chalky terroir of the Côte des Blancs, the full malolactic fermentation, and the brut dosage, all of which preserve the acidity.

As an aperitif, it pairs well with Comté gougères or warm salted almonds. With a meal, it enhances turbot with hollandaise sauce or seared scallops, and finishes beautifully with a lemon meringue pie or a 24-month-aged Comté.

Malolactic fermentation transforms malic acid—which is sharper—into lactic acid, which is rounder. Carried out entirely here and combined with aging in stainless steel tanks, this process softens the wine while preserving the mineral tension typical of the Côte des Blancs.
