Description

The 2014 Extra Brut Grand Cru vintage from Maison Pierre Moncuit is a masterful interpretation of the legendary terroir of Mesnil-sur-Oger. This exceptional Blanc de Blancs reveals all the expressiveness of chalk through its crystalline minerality and vibrant tension. Shaped by a year of beautiful freshness and more than eight years of patience in the cellar, this champagne embodies pure elegance. It is a refined wine, already seductive in its complexity, which will delight lovers of great, taut and sophisticated Chardonnays, seeking a precise and racy taste experience.

The making of the 2014 Pierre Moncuit vintage

The production of this vintage reflects the family's expertise, rooted in the pursuit of absolute purity. Nicole Moncuit, who oversees the house style, has chosen to let the soil speak for itself, without artifice. This 100% Chardonnay is vinified with clockwork precision to preserve the brightness of the fruit and the typical characteristics of the terroir.

The unique character of this cuvée is based on rigorous technical choices:

  • Grand Cru origin: The grapes come exclusively from Mesnil-sur-Oger, a terroir renowned as the "celebrity of the Côte des Blancs" and known for producing the finest, most straightforward wines in Champagne, which are particularly well suited to aging.
  • Long maturation: The wine has been aged for a minimum of 8 years in the cellar. This long period on lees is essential to mellow the vigor of Mesnil and develop tertiary aromas of brioche and toast.
  • Extra Brut dosage: With around 3 grams of sugar per liter, the dosage is minimalist. It highlights the "crystalline minerality" of the wine without ever masking it, offering a clean attack and a pure finish.

The 2014 Vintage: Freshness and Structure

The 2014 vintage offers a profile of great distinction. If each vintage tells a story, this one tells of pure freshness and great liveliness. It is a "dry and chalky" vintage, dominated by aromas of freshly sliced apple and dried lemon, supported by a medium-bodied structure carried by perfectly integrated bubbles. It has the structure necessary to age gracefully.

Tasting of the 2014 Extra Brut Vintage

  • Color

The wine has a bright, clear, golden straw yellow color. The effervescence is fine, reflecting the long maturation in the cellar, which has refined the bubbles.

  • Nose

The bouquet is a complex combination of richness and minerality. The initial nose evokes buttered brioche and toast, signs of successful aging. With aeration, notes of white flowers, vanilla, and a touch of stone unfold, bringing an airy and sophisticated dimension.

  • Palate

The attack is rich, intense, and straightforward. The palate is taut and vibrant, marked by a silky texture that lingers on the finish. Flavors of dried lemon and fresh apple are present. The finish is expressive, combining brioche notes with the salty, mouthwatering minerality typical of Mesnil.

Storage and serving tips

Aging potential

This 2014 Extra Brut vintage is a wine of patience that has already come a long way in the cellar. Although it is "ready to drink now" to enjoy its liveliness, its Grand Cru structure allows it to age well. You can leave it to mature in the cellar for another 5 to 10 years. It will then gain in complexity, developing notes of mocha and sweet spices, while retaining its mineral backbone.

Serving suggestions

To reveal the full finesse of this Pierre Moncuit Champagne, serve it chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 10°C. A tulip-shaped white wine glass is preferable to a flute to allow the aromas of vanilla and brioche to express themselves. Let it open up for a few minutes in the glass so that the minerality of Mesnil can fully develop.

Anecdote about this cuvée

The terroir of Mesnil-sur-Oger is often referred to as the "king" of the Côte des Blancs for the hardness of its chalk and the power of its wines. The Pierre Moncuit House is unique in that it owns very old vines in this prestigious cru. It is these old vines that enable it to achieve that characteristic "rich and intense attack," even in cool vintages such as 2014, where other wines might seem austere. This is the secret behind the balance between chalky tension and silky texture.

Yes, absolutely. It is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes. The term "Blanc de Blancs" means that it is made exclusively from white-skinned grapes, which give it its notes of white flowers and citrus fruits and its characteristic finesse.
