The 2020 Cumières vintage from Champagne Les Frères Mignon is a Brut Nature that perfectly expresses the sunny power and chalky minerality of the village of Cumières. A deep, vibrant, and unpretentious wine, made predominantly from Pinot Noir.
This single-vineyard cuvée comes from the village of Cumières, a warm, south-facing terroir. The three Champagne grape varieties are pressed together, with Pinot Noir dominating and giving the wine its structure.
The year 2020, marked by a hot summer and an early harvest starting on September 1, produced very ripe but perfectly balanced grapes. On the chalky terroirs of Cumières, this ripeness resulted in dense, sunny wines, carried by a chalky verticality and great aromatic precision. A full-bodied and harmonious vintage.
Located on the Montagne de Reims, the Premier Cru village of Cumières benefits from pure chalk soils and a south-facing exposure, offering a warm environment that promotes concentration and ripeness of the berries. Les Frères Mignon practices organic and biodynamic viticulture, with vines selected from massal selections in Avize, Cramant, Cuis, and Cumières. Precise work promotes biodiversity and the faithful expression of the terroir.
The three grape varieties are co-pressed during the harvest. Fermentation and aging take place in 225- and 228-liter barrels, on whole lees, to bring texture and complexity. The cuvée does not undergo malolactic fermentation, thus preserving its tension and integrity. Bottling took place on July 22, 2021, followed by 42 months on slats, before disgorging on January 9, 2025. The cuvée is undosed (0 g/L).
Bright pale gold, fine and regular bubbles. Brilliance typical of chalky terroirs.
Precise and expressive: yellow fruit, citrus zest, floral notes and chalky minerality. A clean, pure nose.
Lively attack, full-bodied texture. Juicy Pinot Noir, salty tension, straightforward freshness. Dry, long finish, carried by chalk and a slight spiciness from the wood.
An energetic champagne, perfect for savory and precise cuisine.
Cumières 2020 is best stored at 10–12°C in a dark cellar with stable humidity. Its structure and lack of dosage will allow it to develop notes of dried fruit, fine honey, and warm chalk.
Optimal window: 2025–2035. Between 2025 and 2028, the wine expresses tension, chalky energy, and aromatic purity. From 2029 to 2033, it gains in amplitude, texture, and floral complexity. From 2034 onwards, it evolves towards a beautiful maturity, combining depth and salinity.
Serve at 9–10°C in a thin tulip glass. A light aeration of 5 minutes is enough to reveal its chalky dimension and delicate fruit.
