The Blanc de Blancs 2019 from Leclerc Briant is a champagne crafted entirely from Chardonnay. Here, the grape variety stands alone, tracing a bright, elegant line that the exceptional 2019 vintage brings fully into focus.
This 100% Chardonnay draws its mineral tension from the terroirs of the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. It speaks in notes of citrus with a hint of white blossom, carried by a taut, well-balanced palate.
This is a bottle you can pour from the very first aperitif, alongside Fine de Claire oysters for instance, before bringing it to the table with a turbot in beurre blanc.
The Blanc de Blancs 2019 is, as the name suggests, made exclusively from Chardonnay.
These Chardonnay grapes come from two Champagne terroirs, the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs, where Leclerc Briant tends its own vines and sources its fruit.
The meeting of these two regions gives the wine a dual character: the Côte des Blancs, Chardonnay's historic homeland, lends freshness and lift, while the Montagne de Reims contributes greater body and structure. This complementary pairing translates in the glass into a fine balance between tension and roundness.
Hervé Jestin, Leclerc Briant's cellar master, chose to vinify this 100% Chardonnay in both stainless steel tanks and oak barrels, a dual approach that gives this Blanc de Blancs 2019 both its freshness and a discreet touch of oak-derived nuance. Time spent in barrel also brings a fuller texture, almost creamy on the palate. The dosage, set at 2.3 g/L, places this champagne in the Extra Brut category: this minimal dosage leaves full room for the precision of the fruit, without ever weighing it down with excess sugar. The cuvée was disgorged in March 2025, a recent step that guarantees all the freshness of this vintage at the moment you taste it.
The 2019 vintage will be remembered for unusually hot weather in Champagne, with a late-June heatwave pushing temperatures well above seasonal norms. This surge in heat sped up the ripening of the Chardonnay, producing grapes rich in sugar but with more modest yields. On the chalky soils of the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims, cooler nights later in the season helped preserve acidity (the natural freshness that gives a wine its backbone) despite the hot summer. The early harvest brought in ripe, concentrated grapes. This vintage lends the cuvée a generous texture carried by a fine, taut mousse.
The colour is a pale straw yellow with golden glints, and a touch of silver shimmer on the surface. Fine bubbles rise in a steady, persistent stream, a sign of a well-mastered, harmonious mousse.
The nose opens on fresh citrus and juicy white orchard fruit, before giving way to a delicate floral touch. A subtle oaky whisper adds depth, a legacy of the time spent in barrel. With aeration, pastry notes emerge, a generous brioche character with a hint of almond, the fruit of a long rest on the lees.
The palate opens with a bright mineral tension, carried by a very measured dosage that lets the fruit speak for itself without ever being masked. The texture reveals itself as full-bodied and creamy, rounded out by the time in barrel, which brings volume and a silky feel. The fruit stays fresh, hovering between citrus and white orchard fruit, underlined by a saline edge on the finish. The finish itself is long and precise, leaving a delicately toasted impression that lingers well after the last sip.
Your bottle travels in a shipping box designed specifically by Plus de Bulles for transporting champagne, so it arrives already well protected from the knocks of the journey. Once home, keep it lying down: this way the wine stays in contact with the cork, which keeps it from drying out and lets it continue to protect the cuvée properly. Store it somewhere with a stable temperature, ideally a cellar around 12°C: big swings in temperature tire the wine out and speed up its evolution. A touch of ambient humidity is welcome too, as it stops the cork drying out over time. Keep it away from light, especially direct sunlight, to avoid "lightstrike", that faintly unpleasant wet-wool smell that light exposure can cause. Finally, steer clear of regular vibration, such as from a fridge or a busy walkway: over time this can disturb the wine. With these few simple steps, this Blanc de Blancs 2019 will wait very happily until you're ready to enjoy it.
The style of the Blanc de Blancs 2019 from Leclerc Briant will keep evolving for several years to come. This is a wine with an ageing potential of around 18 years.
Serve this Blanc de Blancs 2019 at 9-11°C as an aperitif, or 11-13°C alongside a meal. Choose a tulip glass rather than a coupe: its narrower shape concentrates the aromas and lets the fine bubbles breathe without dispersing too quickly. Open the bottle by holding the cork firmly and gently turning the base, without jerking it, so the gas doesn't escape too fast. There's no need to decant or open it ahead of time: serve it straight away, it's ready to show all its freshness the moment it's uncorked.
Before joining Leclerc Briant in 2008, Hervé Jestin spent twenty-four years as cellar master at Duval-Leroy, where he built a reputation as a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture (a way of growing vines that rules out any chemical treatments). The same hand is also behind Abyss 2016, another cuvée from the house. In this Blanc de Blancs 2019, he applies the same rigour: letting Chardonnay alone speak, without artifice, as a statement of his vision of champagne.

This cuvée will be ready for drinking starting in 2027, reach its peak around 2034, and can be cellared until 2043. Its low Extra Brut dosage and 100% Chardonnay blend from the Côte des Blancs make it well-suited for long-term aging.
A Blanc de Blancs, such as the 2019 Blanc de Blancs cuvée, is made from 100% Chardonnay, offering greater tension and mineral freshness. A Blanc de Noirs, on the other hand, uses red grapes (Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier) and results in a more vinous and full-bodied profile.
The dosage indicates the amount of sugar added after disgorgement—in this case, 2.3 g/L—which classifies the cuvée as Extra Brut. This very low dosage allows the Chardonnay’s minerality and crispness to fully express themselves.
This cuvée is crafted by Hervé Jestin, cellar master at Leclerc Briant, renowned for his work in the terroirs of the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs, the birthplace of Chardonnay.
