Krug 2003 is both sunny and elegant.
2003 was a complicated year in Champagne, with a particularly cold and dry winter. Spring was quite pleasant, but two severe frosts caused major crop losses. August was particularly warm, resulting in the earliest harvest since 1822. The harvest began on August 23, but lasted until the beginning of October, due to the great heterogeneity of ripeness in the different plots.
This atypical harvest resulted in an atypical blend. Chardonnay is less present than usual (29%), providing aromatic richness. The Meuniers (25%) offer expressiveness and liveliness, while the Pinots Noirs (46%) provide the structure and fullness that are inseparable from great wines.
Krug 2003 is a champagne with a subtle, delicate golden yellow color. Its bubbles are of infinite finesse.
The nose opens with notes of citrus, plum, honey and brioche. Very greedy, sunny notes.
On the palate, aromas of fresh fruit, pomelo and candied zest take center stage. In the mid-palate, more aged notes of roasted hazelnuts and caramelized apple tart stand out.
