The 2020 Les Coupés cuvée by Nicolas Maillart is a champagne of rare elegance. It is a cuvée that offers aromas of ripe fruit and exceptional freshness.
This cuvée is one of the very few in Champagne, along with Bollinger's Les Vieilles Vignes Françaises, made from vines planted ungrafted, i.e. without the American rootstock that has been mandatory throughout Champagne since the phylloxera epidemic that ravaged French vineyards in the early 20th century. It is made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes from the "Les Coupés" plot in Écueil, classified as Premier Cru. Planted in 1973, it is a massal selection of ungrafted vines. The vines grow on sandy soil with a chalky subsoil, benefiting from a south-facing slope at the bottom of the hill. Vinification takes place in oak barrels, followed by aging on lees for around eight months. Malolactic fermentation is not carried out in order to preserve the wine's freshness and liveliness. The dosage is 0 g/L, allowing the terroir and grape variety to express themselves fully.
The 2020 vintage in Champagne was marked by favorable weather conditions, with a mild spring and a hot summer, allowing the grapes to ripen optimally. These conditions contributed to the production of balanced wines, combining aromatic richness and freshness. The "Les Coupés" plot benefited particularly from this vintage, producing grapes of exceptional quality.
The 2020 Les Coupés vintage has an elegant color with coppery highlights, adorned with fine bubbles forming a light disc.
The nose is powerful, revealing aromas of ripe and stewed fruit, accompanied by milky and milk caramel notes. Woody and smoky touches enrich the aromatic complexity.
On the palate, the wine is intense and rich, combining power and freshness. The ripe fruit and caramel flavors perceived on the nose linger, supported by a marked minerality. The finish is long, pure, and clean.
The price per bottle of Nicolas Maillart's Les Coupés 2020 is 144,95 €. This cuvée is extremely rare, as it is made from ungrafted vines and less than 4,000 bottles have been produced. For lovers of exceptional champagnes, this bottle offers remarkable value for money.
Connoisseurs appreciate Les Coupés 2020 for its aromatic complexity and finesse on the palate. The ripe fruit notes and minerality are particularly prominent. For detailed customer reviews, visit Reviews of Nicolas Maillart's Les Coupés 2020.
