Les Chardonnays de Verzy 2023 from Domaine Sacy Soeur & Frère is a Blanc de Blancs champagne, made exclusively from Chardonnay grown on the Montagne de Reims.
It speaks of citrus and orchard fruit, with a touch of oak in the background. The texture is balanced and taut, carried by a mineral freshness that stays vivid and crisp.
This is a bottle to open at aperitif time, with cheese gougères perhaps, and to bring back to the table with a sole meunière or a roast Bresse chicken. Only 2,600 bottles were produced.
The Terroir
Les Chardonnays de Verzy 2023 is a Blanc de Blancs, meaning it is made exclusively from Chardonnay.
The Chardonnay comes from the terroir of Verzy, a Grand Cru village (the highest rank on the Champagne cru scale) on the Montagne de Reims, where Maison Sacy Soeur & Frère farms its vines.
The wine comes from two parcels, Saint-Bets and Croix de l’Aumonier. Blending two parcels gives the wine several facets of this terroir rather than just one: each brings its own nuance, and it is their union that shapes the balance of the cuvée.
On this terroir, Chardonnay brings freshness and finesse to the wine.
The Winemaking
Jonathan Sacy, the grower at the helm of Sacy Soeur & Frère, chose to age Les Chardonnays de Verzy, a wine from the 2023 harvest, in barrel. This choice of vessel has a tangible effect: the wood lets in a little air, giving the wine a broad, generous texture and subtle oak notes that sit alongside the natural freshness of Chardonnay without overwhelming it.
The wine was then disgorged in April 2026. Disgorgement (the stage that removes the sediment formed in the bottle during the second fermentation) leaves the champagne perfectly clear before it leaves the cellar. This final step marks the moment when the wine, freed of its sediment, is ready to be served just as Jonathan Sacy shaped it.
The 2023 Vintage
In 2023, the Champagne vineyards, Verzy and the Montagne de Reims included, saw almost no frost and no hail. The weather was kind in the run-up to harvest. The bunches came in exceptionally large and full, delivering one of the most generous yields in the last fifty years. That is the defining feature of this vintage: abundance. Careful sorting at harvest kept only the finest grapes.
Acidity (the vivacity that gives a wine its energy) held up. The year gives the cuvée a clean freshness, matched by a generosity of fruit.
