The 2015 Rosé 1522 cuvée from Champagne Philipponnat is a masterful interpretation of the great Pinot Noirs of Aÿ. This gourmet champagne, presented here in its elegant box, embodies the quintessence of the House's expertise in blending and oak aging. Marked by a sunny vintage, it offers remarkable mineral tension combined with fruity and spicy complexity. It is a cuvée with character, ideal for accompanying a refined meal or marking a special occasion thanks to its exceptional aging potential.
This cuvée is blended from a dominant proportion of 83% Pinot Noir and 17% Chardonnay. The heart of this composition comes 75% from the House's historic vineyard, the lieu-dit "Le Léon" in Ay, complemented by Pinot Noir from Mailly and Verzy. The colorful and structuring touch is provided by 8% Pinot Noir vinified in red, from the plots of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. This contribution gives the cuvée its unique color and delicate tannic structure, the signature of great blended rosés.
The proportion of Chardonnay, sourced exclusively from the Verzy terroir, provides the liveliness needed to balance the natural richness of the Pinot Noir grapes from Ay in a hot year such as 2015. The choice of grape varieties from Grands Crus guarantees raw materials of impeccable quality, essential for a cuvée of this caliber.
The grapes come mainly from the village of Aÿ, classified as Grand Cru, renowned for its chalky soils on south-facing slopes. This particular geology allows for natural water regulation, crucial during dry summers, and gives the wines a distinctive chalky power. The Mailly and Verzy plots, located on the Montagne de Reims, benefit from north and east exposure on a limestone base, bringing freshness and tension that counterbalance the maturity of the Aÿ area.
Some of the wines ferment in wood, a traditional method at Philipponnat that promotes gentle micro-oxygenation without imparting excessive woody aromas to the wine. The House has made the technical choice not to carry out malolactic fermentation on this cuvée in order to preserve the natural acidity of the grapes. This choice is decisive for the 2015 vintage, allowing it to retain great freshness and increased aging potential. The dosage is Extra-Brut, reduced to 4.25 g/l, or one-third of the usual dosage in Champagne, to allow the wine to express the purity of its terroir and minerality without any sweet artifice. Aging on lees lasts eight years, a long period that refines the bubbles and develops tertiary aromatic complexity.
The year 2015 was characterized by contrasting weather conditions, with a mild winter followed by a cool spring and a particularly dry and sunny summer. This summer water stress, rare in Champagne, promoted optimal concentration of the berries and full phenolic ripeness, particularly on the southern slopes of Aÿ and Mareuil. The rains at the end of August came at just the right time to kick-start the final ripening process, allowing healthy grapes with an excellent sugar-acid balance to be harvested. In the 1522 Rosé cuvée, this sunny vintage is reflected in a rich and fruity texture, tempered by the precision of vinification without malolactic fermentation, which maintains a fresh and taut backbone.
The color of the "1522 Rosé 2015" cuvée is a deep raspberry pink, with slight coppery highlights typical of rosés with character. The effervescence is fine, forming a delicate and persistent cordon on the surface of the glass.
The nose reveals a delicious intensity marked by aromas of black cherry and ripe red fruits. With aeration, the bouquet evolves towards more complex and spicy notes, evoking Sichuan pepper and cardamom, the signature of the Aÿ terroir.
On the palate, this champagne offers a fresh and precise attack, dominated by blood citrus flavors such as pomelo and pink grapefruit. The structure is vinous, supported by well-integrated silky tannins, and stretches out into a long, mineral finish.
To preserve the qualities of this exceptional wine, store the bottle horizontally, away from light and vibrations. The ideal storage temperature is between 46 and 50°F, with a humidity level of around 70% to ensure the elasticity of the cork. If you wish to store this wine for a long period of time, the box provided offers additional protection from light, although storage in a dark cellar remains essential.
The 2015 vintage, with its richness and structure, is made for aging. Thanks to the absence of malolactic fermentation, which preserves its freshness, this champagne will improve patiently in the cellar. From 2030 onwards, it will develop more tertiary notes of dried fruit, cocoa, and undergrowth, while retaining its nobility. It can be stored and enjoyed until 2035, or even beyond for lovers of Champagne wines that have been aged over time.
This great gastronomic rosé deserves special attention when serving. Serve at a temperature of between 46°F and 48°F as an aperitif, and allow it to warm slightly to between 50°F and 52°F during the meal to release its full aromatic palette. A large white wine glass or a tulip-shaped flute is recommended to allow the wine to breathe and express its spicy complexity.
The name "1522" is a direct tribute to the deep roots of the Philipponnat family in Champagne. It refers to the year when Apvril le Philipponnat was registered as the owner of vineyards in the locality known as "Le Léon," between Ay and Dizy. More than five centuries later, this same terroir still forms the backbone of this prestigious cuvée, weaving an unbroken link between family history and today's winemaking excellence. It is this historic plot that gives Cuvée 1522 its unique identity and legitimacy among the great wines of Champagne.

This cuvée is dosed at Extra-Brut at 4.25 g/l. This low dosage allows the minerality of the Ay terroir to shine through and preserves great aromatic purity, highlighting the spicy character of Pinot Noir.
The blend is dominated by Pinot Noir (83%), mainly from the historic "Le Léon" vineyard in Ay, complemented by 17% Chardonnay from Verzy for freshness. 8% of the Pinot Noir is vinified as red wine.
Thanks to its tannic structure and power, this rosé is the perfect accompaniment to lamb, roasted shellfish, or firm-fleshed fish. It also enhances lightly sweetened desserts featuring red fruits, such as a raspberry tart.
Absolutely, 2015 is an exceptional, sunny vintage in Champagne. It produced rich, concentrated, and ripe wines, which Philipponnat's expertise balanced with a vinification process that preserved their freshness.
