Description

Pertois-Lebrun's Les Chétillons No. 16 is an absolute rarity, with only 1,582 bottles produced. This Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru comes from one of the most legendary terroirs in the Côte des Blancs: the lieu-dit "Les Chétillons" in Mesnil-sur-Oger. A vintage (2016) and single-vineyard interpretation, this champagne is partially aged in wood and undergoes a long aging process of seven years. It is a high-quality, unfiltered Extra-Brut, combining the chalky tension of Mesnil with a patinated complexity.

The production of Les Chétillons No. 16 Pertois-Lebrun

This champagne is 100% Chardonnay, made exclusively from the first pressings (the "cuvée") to guarantee the utmost purity. The vinification process is precise: after alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wines are aged on fine lees for 10 months. This aging is divided between vats (53%) to preserve tension and oak barrels (47%) to provide structure and complexity. Respectful of the raw material, the wine undergoes neither fining nor filtration (natural clarification).

The Terroir

The grapes come exclusively from the famous "Les Chétillons" vineyard, located in the commune of Mesnil-sur-Oger (Grand Cru). This terroir is world-renowned for its chalky soil, which gives the wines a straightforwardness, incisive minerality, and exceptional aging potential.

Aging

This limited edition was bottled on July 18, 2017. The bottles were then rested on slats for seven years in the House's cellars. Disgorging took place on June 21, 2024, followed by a very low Extra-Brut dosage of 2.5 g/l, preserving the characteristic mineral tension of Mesnil.

Edition No. 16 (Base 2016)

The name "No. 16" refers to the 2016 vintage. This classic year in Champagne produced beautifully balanced Chardonnays, combining structured acidity with just the right amount of aromatic maturity. On the cold terroir of Mesnil-sur-Oger, this vintage expresses great verticality, here enveloped by aging in wood and time.

Tasting notes

  • Color

The color is a pale, brilliant gold, enlivened by a fine, persistent effervescence, evidence of long aging on lees.

  • Nose

The nose is racy and complex. It opens with notes of white flowers, fresh citrus, and wet chalk, quickly complemented by hints of toasted hazelnut, fresh butter, and sweet spices from barrel aging.

  • Palate

On the palate, the attack is sharp and crystalline, typical of Mesnil. The texture is then full and silky, textured by the wood. The finish is endless, salty and remarkably pure.

Storage and serving recommendations

How should this champagne be stored?

This exceptional cuvée is delivered in bottles. As it is unfiltered and low in dosage, it is sensitive to light and must be stored in complete darkness. Store it lying down in a cool (10-12°C), stable cellar to allow the wine to rest after recent disgorging.

Aging potential

Les Chétillons n°16 is a wine with immense aging potential. Its optimal tasting window extends over more than 15 years:

  • 2025–2029: The wine expresses its mineral tension, chalky purity, and fresh citrus notes (energy phase).
  • 2030–2035: It gains in body and richness, with the woody notes melting away completely to give way to aromas of brioche and dried fruit (fullness phase).
  • From 2036 onwards: The cuvée shifts towards tertiary aromas of mocha, truffle, and beeswax, while retaining the acidic backbone of Mesnil (Complexity phase).

Serving suggestions

Serve this great Blanc de Blancs at a temperature of 10 to 12°C. A large white wine glass is essential to allow it to breathe and reveal the complexity of its oak aging.

Anecdote about this cuvée
