Le Clos du Mesnil 2009 from Maison Krug is an exceptional champagne made from a single 1.84-hectare plot located in the heart of the village of Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the greatest historic Chardonnay terroirs in Champagne. This Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, from a single year, embodies the precision and purity of this iconic grape variety. The 2009 vintage, generous and perfectly balanced, gives this rare cuvée a controlled richness and great mineral tension.
Clos du Mesnil has been surrounded by protective walls since 1698. Its perfectly homogeneous and ideally exposed plot allows Chardonnay to express unique intensity and precision. True to its philosophy, Krug chose to vinify the wines from each plot separately before blending, but in the case of Clos du Mesnil, it was the uniqueness of this plot that justified exclusive vinification.
Clos du Mesnil is located in the village of Mesnil-sur-Oger, recognized as one of the most prestigious for Chardonnay. Its chalky soil, combined with a particular microclimate, allows the grapes to reach perfect maturity while preserving their freshness and tension. It is from this terroir that a champagne of chiseled purity is born, recognized as one of the greatest Chardonnays in the world.
Krug practices meticulous parcel-by-parcel vinification, respecting the fruit and the terroir. Each bunch is carefully selected and then vinified in a way that preserves its aromatic complexity and precision. Le Clos du Mesnil 2009 was aged for a long time in the cellar, benefiting from several years of maturation on lees before disgorging. The brut dosage is calibrated to respect the natural balance of the wine, highlighting its freshness and depth. Each bottle, packaged in a wooden case, reflects the care taken with this rare cuvée.
The year 2009 was characterized by particularly favorable weather conditions. After a temperate spring and a hot, dry summer, the harvest yielded perfectly ripe grapes in excellent condition. The Chardonnay grapes from Clos du Mesnil showed exceptional richness, balanced by a fine, structuring acidity. Clos du Mesnil 2009 stands out for its intensity, density, and remarkable length on the palate.
The color is a bright, light gold with brilliant highlights. The fine, persistent effervescence reflects the long maturation in the cellar.
The nose reveals great complexity, with notes of fresh citrus, white flowers, followed by aromas of hazelnut, brioche, and minerals. Hints of dried fruit and flint complete this elegant bouquet.
The palate combines fullness and tension. The attack is precise, supported by a straightforward mineral structure. Flavors of yellow fruit, citrus zest, and toasted almonds express themselves before a long, salty, and chiseled finish. The style of the 2009 vintage gives the wine a richness balanced by a vibrant freshness.
Le Clos du Mesnil 2009 is best stored in a dark, temperature-controlled cellar, between 46 and 54°F, with bottles lying down. Its presentation in a wooden case facilitates optimal storage by limiting temperature and light variations.
This single vineyard champagne has remarkable aging potential, from 20 to 30 years. Over time, it will develop aromas of honey, dried fruit, and truffle, while retaining its freshness and minerality. It is one of the rare champagnes that can be enjoyed both in its youth and at full maturity.
Serve Clos du Mesnil 2009 at 10°C in Burgundy-style white wine glasses to enhance its aromatic expression and mineral precision. Light decanting may be considered to fully release the bouquet in the early years.
