The 2012 Les Romaines champagne produced by Hugues Godmé is a rare cuvée that showcases an often overlooked grape variety: Meunier. Sourced from a single Premier Cru plot in the Ville-Dommange terroir, this single-vineyard cuvée embodies the winemaker's desire to reveal the precise identity of each lieu-dit. It is a unique Blanc de Meuniers, vinified like a great Burgundy wine, which breaks with the conventions of the Montagne de Reims.
Far from the classic blends, this 2012 vintage offers a tasting experience marked by unapologetic richness and indulgence. Aged in wood and offered without dosage, it reveals a ripe and flattering aromatic palette, typical of great Meuniers pampered by time. This is a powerful and mature bottle for gastronomy, intended for enthusiasts curious to discover the other side of the great Champagne terroirs.
The philosophy behind this cuvée is based on uniqueness: a single plot, a single year, a single grape variety. The blend is therefore a pure and unadulterated reflection of a historic Champagne variety, magnified here by demanding viticulture:
This bold choice of a single Meunier grape variety in a vintage wine captures the velvety texture and natural roundness of this fruit, while giving it a structure capable of aging over the years.
The terroir of Ville-Dommange, classified as Premier Cru in the "Petite Montagne de Reims," is the birthplace of this cuvée. The vines of the "Les Romaines" plot, planted in 1998, are rooted in a unique soil composed of sand and clay-limestone.
This hybrid geology is fundamental to understanding the profile of the wine. The sand brings aromatic finesse and a certain suppleness, while the clay-limestone base ensures the necessary water retention and provides structure. Although the 2012 vintage predates official AB certification (obtained in 2013), the vineyard was already being managed with careful attention and respect for living organisms, allowing the root system to draw nutrients from deep within the soil.
To tame the exuberance of Meunier and give it aging potential, Hugues Godmé opts for an ambitious vinification process. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out entirely in oak barrels. This year-long aging in wood allows for micro-oxygenation, which rounds out the edges, fixes the aromas, and adds notes of sweet spices.
This wine is neither fined nor filtered, thus retaining all its richness. The aging period in the cellar is remarkably long for a Meunier: the bottles rested on lees for at least 96 months (8 years) before disgorging. The cuvée is undosed (Brut Nature), a choice of absolute transparency that allows the natural richness of the grapes and the aging process to express themselves fully.
The year 2012 is considered one of the greatest vintages of the decade in Champagne. Despite chaotic weather conditions at the beginning of the cycle (frost, hail, humidity), the end of the summer season was dry and sunny, saving the harvest. Yields were low, but the quality of the grapes was exceptional, with optimal sugar concentration and phenolic ripeness.
For the Les Romaines cuvée, this sunny vintage exacerbated the ripe and indulgent character of the Meunier. It gave the wine an impressive density and vibrant energy which, combined with the absence of dosage, created a fascinating balance between fruity opulence and structural freshness.
The color is a deep, shimmering gold, reflecting the maturity of the vintage and the oak aging. The effervescence is fine and creamy, forming a persistent bead.
The aromatic bouquet is particularly seductive and flattering. It opens with generous notes of ripe yellow fruit (peach, apricot) and becomes more complex with hintsof sweet spices and bourbon vanilla from the oak barrel.
On the palate, the wine reveals its full personality. It is powerful and full-bodied, coating the palate with a silky texture. There is a marked richness, evolving towards aromas of salted butter caramel and pastry, while retaining a beautiful freshness on the finish that avoids any heaviness.
The 2012 Les Romaines cuvée has excellent aging potential thanks to its acidity and barrel aging. To preserve its integrity, store the bottle horizontally in a dark (light is vital), cool (40-50°F), and stable cellar. Humidity must be sufficient to keep the cork supple.
Disgorged after 8 years in the cellar, this wine is at perfect maturity but can still evolve favorably.
This vinous champagne should be served at a moderate temperature of around 40°F to 46°F. Serving it too cold will mask its richness and yellow fruit aromas. It is essential to serve it in a large white wine glass (such as a white Burgundy glass) to allow its rich aromas to express themselves fully.
The name "Les Romaines" evokes the ancient history of Champagne, recalling that vines were already cultivated there in Gallo-Roman times. But the real uniqueness of this cuvée lies in its audacity: producing a 100% Meunier, a grape variety often confined to blends, with the same level of excellence (barrels, long aging, brut nature) as a grand cru Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. Hugues Godmé proves here that on a great terroir such as Ville-Dommange, Meunier is capable of rivaling the region's greatest wines.

This cuvée is acclaimed for its unusual character and delicious flavor. Critics often highlight the success of the oak aging process, which enhances the Meunier without overpowering it, offering unique notes of salted butter caramel. Reviews of the 2012 Les Romaines Hugues Godmé cuvée confirm that this is a great wine for fine dining.
The blend is 100% Meunier. All the grapes come exclusively from the "Les Romaines" plot located in the Premier Cru terroir of Ville-Dommange.
This is a Brut Nature champagne, meaning it has no added sugar (0 g/l). The absence of sugar prevents the naturally rich and rounded Meunier grapes from becoming too heavy in this mature vintage.
The wine is aged entirely in oak barrels (100%) to give it structure and complexity. The wine is neither fined nor filtered, and is aged on slats for at least 96 months.
This is a round, powerful, and indulgent champagne. It stands out for its aromatic palette of yellow fruits and spices, as well as its finish of salted caramel.
